Bullpen Extravaganza - Hello, Koji Uehara

Koji Uehara could see save opportunities for Boston. (US Presswire)
Unless your fantasy team currently has one closer or you "punted" the saves category all together, you've likely struggled with finding consistent ninth inning pitchers.
First and foremost, I think it's important to remember not to overreact when a "closer" blows a save. In most cases, the job is still likely his. However, if the "closer" continues to blow saves in consecutive opportunities, he's likely out of a job in the ninth inning.
Red Sox have depth
The most recent bullpen news comes via the Boston Red Sox. With relievers Andrew Bailey (biceps) and Joel Hanrahan (forearm) both out with injuries, the Red Sox will likely turn towards Koji Uehara (25% Yahoo!) and Junichi Tazawa (14% Yahoo!) to help out with save opportunities. Both Uehara and Tazawa have been fantastic this year, combining for 11.3 strikeouts per nine innings, 1.6 walks per nine innings, and a 2.57 ERA (3.37 FIP) in 28 innings. Boston has not named a "closer" with both Bailey and Hanrahan out, however, Boston Red Sox Manager John Farrell could leave Uehara in the eighth inning and simply move Tazawa to the ninth inning. According to our Bullpen Usage page, Farrell has not been shy about using both Tazawa and Uerhara on back-to-back nights. Regardless of which pitcher Farrell goes with, both options are good.
Andrew Bailey has been very good for the Red Sox this season (14.6 K/9, 5 saves) but has also been an injury risk during his career. He's currently dealing with a right biceps injury, but is expected to undergo another MRI to determine his status moving forward. If Bailey's MRI comes back clean, he could likely be back in a few days and would return to his ninth inning job. However, in the meantime, I'm targeting both Uerhara and Tazawa as waiver wire pickups until more is known with Hanrahan or Bailey. I'm certainly not dropping Bailey in any league, as the job will still remain his once he returns to action in Boston.
The Cubs are the Cubs
The Chicago Cubs love being the Chicago Cubs. Thus far, they've tried many match-ups in order to find a reliever that could handle being a "closer". Surprisingly, the Cubs seem to be content with Kevin Gregg in the ninth inning position right now. Carlos Marmol has posted his big strikeout numbers, but also can't find the strike zone on most nights. Kyuji Fujikawa recorded two saves in five games before landing on the disabled list with a forearm injury. However, Fujikawa is expected to return from the disabled list this week as long as his rehab appearances go well at the Double-A level. Gregg has been a nice addition for owners that needed "dirty" saves, but when Fujikawa returns, I would expect him to return to the ninth inning role at some point.
Royal flush
I personally was very high on Greg Holland entering the 2013 season, and after a rough start (4 earned runs in 2 innings of work) - he's settled down nicely until his recent outing against the Chicago White Sox (4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K). Despite the recent blown save, Holland has been very good at striking out hitters, posting 14.3 strikeouts per nine innings, but has also seen his walk totals increase to 5.3 per nine innings (3.9 career BB/9). It's safe to say that Holland sticks with this role for the foreseeable future, as eighth inning reliever Kelvin Herrera has struggled as the "closer". Herrera has big strikeout numbers (11.9 K/9 this season) but has also struggled with home runs, as he's allowed six home runs in 14.1 innings of work this season.
On the move?
Steve Cishek only has four saves for the Miami Marlins this season (and there is good reason) but has posted 9.7 strikeouts per nine innings in 13 innings of work this season. Currently, Cischek is arbitration eligible in 2014 and is under team control through the 2017 season. The Marlins love to trade good players away and could possibly use Cishek's team control years as a bargaining chip. Although the trade deadline is a few months away, it's always something to keep an eye on. If Cishek were to be moved, Jon Rauch, Ryan Webb, or Mike Dunn could see ninth inning duties.
Grant Balfour of the Oakland Athletics is eligible for free agency after the 2013 season, which means he could find a new home before the end of the July trade deadline. The 25-year-old Australian native has converted all five of his save opportunities in 2013 while also striking out 8.8 hitters and allowing 6 walks in 13.1 innings. He's job security isn't in jeopardy while playing for the Athletics, but if he's traded, owners will need to keep an eye on how Balfour is used on his new team. As far as the Athletics, the team would turn to Ryan Cook for save opportunities. Cook, 25, has 10.2 strikeouts per nine innings this season and has allowed a total of four home runs in 96 career innings.
As always, stay up to date with all the recent reliever usage via our Bullpen Usage page.

Red Sox HAVE named the closer as Tazawa. Uehara as setup man.
