Under the Radar - Mixed Leagues and AL/NL Only
Saturday July 6th, 2013
Gordan Beckham is showing he can be useful once again. (US Presswire)
Each week, Baseball Press will be providing some "Under the Radar" fantasy players for NL-only leagues, AL-only leagues and mixed leagues. We'll review the diamonds in the rough on the waiver wire who might help you boost your fantasy team in 2013. This edition of Under the Radar will cover potential pickups for your team that may be available early on in the season.

With all of the unpredictable injuries, job changes, and trades of the baseball season, many fantasy owners are looking to the waiver wire for help. Regardless of where help is needed, this edition of UTR can provide you with some players who are still available in most mixed leagues.

Mixed League Options
Gordon Beckham - 2B, Chicago White Sox (6% owned)
Surprisingly enough, one of the bright spots among the White Sox offense of late has been Gordan Beckham. The 26-year-old, former first round draft pick, returned from the disabled list in early June. A trip due to the removal of his hamate bone in his left hand. Since returning to the lineup, he is hitting .324 with a home run and three stolen bases. Beckham showed tremendous upside early in his career, but has struggled over the past three years. Perhaps a change in approach at the plate, due to the injury, is going to turn him back into a productive fantasy second baseman.

Brian Roberts - 2B, Baltimore Orioles (9% owned)
The now healthy - enjoy it folks - Brian Roberts has been slotted back in as the Orioles every day second baseman. Even though health has not been a strength of Roberts, his ability to get on base, and use of his speed after reaching base, has been. Middle infield is a wasteland in most mixed leagues, and being able to pick up a guy with tremendous upside, that is playing in a good offense, should be a no-brainer for some owners in deeper mixed leagues.

Delmon Young - OF, Philadelphia Phillies (6% owned)
Delmon Young is about as streaky as they get, and he is definitely in the midst of one of his tears. With the acknowledgement of him being streaky already there, it should be pointed out that the 27-year-old veteran is not a long-term option, but should be used when performing as he is. In the last two weeks, he has a .432 batting average, nine RBI, and a home run. In the past, a spike in his batting average like this has been followed by a barrage of home runs.

NL-Only Options
Juan Francisco - 1B/3B, Milwaukee Brewers (10% owned)
Juan Francisco was probably owned in most NL-Only leagues when the season began, but after being designated for assignment by the Atlanta Braves, and then off to a slow start with the Brewers, he more than likely was dropped from most fantasy rosters. As of late, his performance has picked up, with four home runs and a .324 batting average in the last 14 days. The news that Corey Hart may be done for the season also increases his long term value for 2013.

DJ LeMahieu - 2B, Colorado Rockies (6% owned)
Even though the peripheral stats do not support the performance, DJ LeMahieu has been one of the best second basemen, when it comes to hitting for average in the National League since the Rockies made him their every day guy. Over that period, he has hit .294, with a home run, and eight stolen bases. Even though he's had much success, he may eventually be squeezed out of at-bats after Troy Tulowitzki returns from the disabled list - but Josh Rutledge may once again be the odd man out once that happens.

AL-Only Options
Zoilo Almonte - OF, New York Yankees (6% owned)
When Zoilo Almonte joined the New York Yankees, most thought his role would be minor and short term with the impending return of Curtis Granderson, but his performance in the field and at the plate has started to change his initial role with the team. In his first 50 major league at-bats, he is carrying a .314 average, with one home run, and three stolen bases. Vernon Wells is not performing at the plate, and Granderson's return is further away than expected, so look for Almonte to continue to get more and more at-bats over the next three to four weeks.

Martin Perez - SP/RP, Texas Rangers (11% owned)
Once regarded as one of the top pitching prospects in the American League, Martin Perez lost that label due to his performance over the last year and a half in the minor leagues. He had a chance to start the season with the Rangers, following spring training, but lost that after taking a line drive off his forearm. In his most recent recall to the big leagues, Perez has pitched well, allowing only two earned runs in 19 innings pitched over three starts, while striking out ten. He is a ground ball pitcher, and if he continues to be effective in that regard he is a safe play.
