The Toronto Blue Jays are no strangers to injuries over the past two seasons, and the team suffered another significant injury, as starting shortstop Jose Reyes was injured on Friday night during a stolen base attempt against the Kansas City Royals.

The extent of the injury is not known at this point, but Blue Jays General Manager Alex Anthopoulous stated that he estimated Reyes could be out 1 to 3 months. The team is still awaiting MRI results.

Reyes, one of the biggest off-season acquisitions for the Jays, was off to a terrific start in 2013, hitting .395/.465/.526 with one home run and five stolen bases.

With third baseman Brett Lawrie currently out due to an injury, the left side of Toronto's infield is a mess. For now, Maicer Izturis seems the likely candidate to fill in at shortstop. Izturis, 32, has appeared in 195 games at shortstop. Prior to the Reyes injury, Izturis was filling in at third base, but will shift over. Regarding third base, Mark DeRosa could be the favorite to land starts at the hot corner moving forward. However, the team could also use Jose Bautista at third base, as he shifted to third base during the Royals game after Reyes exited with his injury. If Bautista does in fact start at third base, Toronto would use Rajai Davis in right field.

From a fantasy standpoint, you can expect Reyes to at least miss a month, but based on the reaction to the injury, the time frame will likely be longer. Owners won't be able to replicate the production from the loss of Reyes, so managers will need to pick-up the best available shortstop on the waiver wire. Unfortunately, the shortstop position was already weak entering this season, but options like Jean Segura (41% owned in Yahoo!), Zack Cozart (26% owned in Yahoo!), and Brandon Crawford (5% owned in Yahoo! leagues) will have to suffice for now.
