In this edition of 2019 Fantasy Boom, we examine outfielder Hunter Renfroe of the San Diego Padres.
Over the past two seasons, Renfroe has hit a total of 52 home runs, placing him just inside the top 10 among all National League hitters. However, with the home runs, have also come the strikeouts, as Renfroe strikes out about 26.6% of the time for his career. If you mix in the below average walk rate with playing for a terrible team, a lot of owners will pass on Renfroe.
One thing that has sold me on Renfroe for next season is his incredible second half in 2018. Renfroe, turning 27 soon, hit a total of 19 home runs and showed a continue growth for putting the ball in the air. He hit a total of 45.5% of batted balls in the air during the second half of the 2018 season. Overall, he ended the season with a 42.8% fly-ball percentage, which was down from his 2017 total of 45.4%. However, he was able to increase his line-drive percentage from 16.7% in 2017 to 19.7% in 2018.
The Padres outfielder likely won't offer owners much in terms of batting average or on-base percentage, but it's hard to find value in Renfroe and his potential to hit 30 home runs in a season. I would draft Renfroe with a late flier, as a fourth outfielder or utility player.
