Baseball Press presents "The 606", a look at the most intriguing pitching matchup of the day, with a final prediction of the winning pitcher. You may be asking yourself "What exactly does The 606 mean? There's no major league baseball for that area code- it's in Eastern Kentucky!" BBP isn't listing players from Eastern Kentucky either. The 606 is short for 60 feet and 6 inches. If you still don't understand, I direct your attention to Official Rule 1.07 from Major League Baseball, referring to the distance from the pitching mound to home plate. Now that we've got that squared away, let's take a look at today's featured pitching matchup for Sunday, September 26th.
Yesterday, Barry Zito and Jason Hammel were involved in an early slug fest from Coors Field. Neither pitcher walked away with a decision, but the Rockies won the game via a walk-off double from Troy Tulowitzki. Is Tulo even human?
No Decision: Barry Zito (4.1 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 1.85 WHIP)
The 606 Season-to-Date Record (W-L-ND): 110-96-69, 3.81 ERA (725 ER in 1711 IP)
In today's 606, we head back to Coors Field, as it's another battle between two NL West teams fighting for a playoff spot. With the Rox winning against the Giants last night via a walk-off extra inning double from TULO, the Rox need every win they can get.
RHP Matt Cain - SF (12-10 3.00 ERA) vs. LHP Jorge De La Rosa - COL (8-5, 4.22 ERA)
Arguably one of the best pitchers of the second half of this season has been Matt Cain . Since the All Star break, Cain has posted 6-2 record with a 2.53 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP over thirteen starts. Over his last five starts, Cain is 2-0 with a 2.62 ERA and opponents are hitting just .184/.215/.328 against him. But, as it has been all season for Cain - lack of run support is an issue for this right-handed pitcher, as he's receiving just 4.1 of run support per start this season. During three starts against the Rox this season, Cain has posted a 2-0 record with a 1.57 ERA and has a 7.4 K/9 ratio. While pitching in Coors Field over eight career starts, Raising Cain is 3-2 with a 3.64 ERA. The red-hot Troy Tulowitzki is hitting .333/.643/1.021 with 3 HR and 5 RBI over 42 at-bats against Cain.
Things are coming down to the wire in the NL West standings race, and the Rox need a gem from Jorge De La Rosa
during today's outing. JDLR has been perfect against the Giants over his career, posting a 6-0 record over 11 appearances (8 starts) with a 2.60 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, and a 8.1 K/9 ratio. In one start against the G-Men this season, JLDR took a no decision after allowing just one earned run over seven innings, while striking out nine and walking four. At home this season, Jorge is 6-2 with a 4.06 ERA and has allowed five home runs. During the month of September this season, De La Rosa is 3-1 with a 4.10 ERA with a majority of his problems coming via the home run, as he's already allowed five this month.
Final Prediction: Jorge De La Rosa
