Expiring contracts typically mean two things to fantasy players. The first thing that comes to mind most of the time is "this guy is playing for a payday," which can be true. The second thing that needs to pop into your head is, will this guy be moved before August and how is that going to affect his production for the last two months of the season.
Below you will find Middle Infielders that have fantasy significance with expiring contracts that could be working harder this year for a bigger payday next year and/or find themselves packing their bags for a new home by August 1st. Players with an * by their name have a club option, ** by their name have a mutual option and *** have a vesting option.
Second Basemen
Orlando Hudson - Minnesota Twins
The O-Dog at age 32 this year is playing on a one year contract and probably should be expecting that for the rest of his career. He is an excellent defensive player that will not surprise you, good or bad, with the bat. Expect more of the same this year from Hudson.
Akinori Iwamura - Pittsburgh Pirates
You can't expect Aki to do anything spectacular, he is what he is. What you need to remember is that the Pirates are in rebuilding mode and it is doubtful that this 31 year old second baseman is in their long term plans. Look for a move come August 1st if there is any interest from another team.
Jose Lopez* - Seattle Mariners
Here is a player that is going into his prime season and at the end of his contract that you need to keep an eye on. A trade is dependant on the success of the team, and if they are sellers at the deadline Lopez will probably be the first to go but shouldn't lose playing time when dealt.
Dan Uggla - Florida Marlins
Even though he is not officially a free agent at the end of this year I had to put him on the list because of his impending arbitration eligibility. The Marlins have a few options at second with Chris Coghlan and Emilio Bonafacio and if they can score some top notch prospects for Uggla they will. He is all but out of Florida come August 1st, possibly to the San Francisco Giants if they are contending still at the deadline.
Ronnie Belliard (LAD), Juan Uribe (SF), and Kaz Matsui (HOU) are all veterans that will probably be playing on one year contracts for the rest of their tenure in Major League Baseball. It is doubtful that any of these players' performances will be affected in their walk year.
Shortstops
Orlando Cabrera - Cincinnati Reds
Reds' Manager Dusty Baker loves his veterans and Cabrera fit that bill over incumbent Paul Janish. He is beyond the end of his career and safe to say twilight. His appeal to be able to steal bases is fading fast and expect more decline this year.
Cristian Guzman - Washington Nationals
With trade talks surrounding Guzman in the offseason it is only a matter of time before a team makes a swap for him. Once prospect Ian Desmond can show he is ready for the Bigs, which could be at the end of March, expect Guzman to be moved into a utility/bench role for a team that needs a solid MI backup.
Maicer Izturis - Los Angeles Angels
Always the bridesmaid never the bride, Maicer has fallen into the super utility role for Manager Mike Scioscia in Anaheim. He could see an increase in at-bats this year and has had respectable ratios throughout his career but any boost in counting stats will be directly related to his number of at-bats. He is too valuable to be moved out of Anaheim because of his versatility but don't draft him as a starter.
Jhonny Peralta* - Cleveland Indians
Turning 28 in May and probably in his final MI qualifying year, Jhonny falls into both mindsets mentioned in the introduction. He is playing for possibly his last multi-year pay day and is at the right age to surprise again - remember two years ago he had a 23/89/.276 line. With the logjam that Cleveland created at the corners by signing Russell Branyan, AL-only leaguers should keep in mind on draft day that Peralta could be sent packing.
Jose Reyes* (NYM), Jimmy Rollins* (PHI), and Derek Jeter (NYY) will all be back with their current teams next year and the only player playing for money this season is Jeter. The way Derek has played the game for the past ten years I can't see this making any difference in his performance since he leaves it all out on the field anyway.
