With the World Series complete, why not turn your focus towards 2010? Baseball Press is kicking off our 2010 Fantasy Positional Rankings with the catching position. Players are eligible for the position if they played at least 10 games at that position in 2009. These are initial rankings heading into draft day and do not reflect the final rankings come October 2010. The statistics listed to each player are his FINAL 2009 numbers, not the projected 2010 stats. Enough jibber-jabber, let's get to it.

The first five rankings are pretty standard with the exception of Kurt Suzuki. You could easily flip-flop Suzuki and Miguel Montero, because of Montero's potential to drive in runs from the 4th and 5th spot in the D'backs lineup. If Stephen Drew and Justin Upton can continue to produce, Montero has a real chance of driving in 80-90 runs in 2010.
I think Matt Wieters is ranked appropriately because of his sold finish in 2009. Wieters hit over .300 AVG in his final 65 games with a .765 OPS. The Orioles had Wieters batting third as the season ended in 2009, in which he hit .340 AVG, 2 HR, 7 RBI in 12 games. Some may say I have him ranked too high, but he's proven that he could make the adjustments needed to succeed and that shouldn't change in 2010. All fantasy owners (at least I think) wish for Ryan Doumit would be shipped to a different team (see example Nate McLouth) so that we can see some real production, that's why I ranked him just inside the Top 10. To rank him this high may be a stretch, as he's only played in 100+ games during one of the past five seasons. As of right now, I've given Russell Martin and Geovany Soto rankings just around the Top 10 because even though they had poor 2009 campaigns, they still redeem their starter status and are still viable options heading into 2010.
I hope I'm not the only one who has Chris Iannetta ranked just outside the Top 10, but if I am, I'll gladly take his 20+ HR potential and .270 AVG.
A.J. Pierzynski is another guy like Soto and Martin who I don't expect to hit 20 HR, but they provide a serviceable option for your team in 2010. A.J. should be fine for most of the 2010 season, but he does have Tyler Flowers looming in the background.
Bengie Molina is a 35 year old catcher who provides 20 HR pop and appears to be the everyday starter for the Giants next season.
With the catching market scare this season, Kelly Shoppach becomes a reliable option with the Rays. Shoppach will probably see a bulk of the starts over Dioner Navarro making him a real threat to hit 15 homers.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Jesus Flores are my "buy low" picks for 2010. These are two guys who battled injuries in 2009, but still have the talent and are great late round picks. I'm thinking most owners will overlook these guys because of their poor statistical 2009 seasons, but I suspect both will be the number one starter as the season rolls on.
John Baker and John Buck have starting jobs, but that's about it. Neither one will blow you away, but will fill the position if you haven't already grabbed a catcher in your draft.
Jeff Clement is linked to rumors as the Bucs opening day first basemen, but also has catching eligibility this season. Clement has been great in the minors over the past seasons, but has failed to translate that into any kind of success at the big league level. He's ranked for now but that could soon change as spring training will reveal the plan for Clement.
Adam Moore and Lou Marson are nice AL-Only options, but I wouldn't rely on them too heavily in mixed leagues.
Alex Avila is ranked because Gerald Laird was just awful in 2009 and could his playing time cut short in Detroit. The only asset helping Laird is his playing time, but that will change.
Buster Posey's draft day value took a huge hit once the news broke that Molina has re-signed with the Giants.
